This outstanding work comprises the facsimile reprint of the autograph
manuscript score of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Otello
which has been conserved in Milan in the Archivio di Casa Ricordi since
the first performance of the opera, at La Scala in Milan in 1887. The
facsimile faithfully reproduces the manuscript score in its original
form in four volumes, half-bound in leather with gilt impressions on
the spine. The work also includes the facsimile reproduction, in a
small portfolio, of the pages of the manuscript score of the Ballabili and the altered Finale for the performances at the Opéra in Paris in 1894. The facsimile is accompanied by a volume of text, with numerous archival illustrations, sketches, sets, costumes, some photographs etc., on the history and iconography of the opera. Two further facsimile scores are planned.

This very fine facsimile reprint of Giacomo Puccini’s autograph score of Tosca follows the facsimile reprint by the same publisher of Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello. Tosca
is one of the most significant manuscripts by Puccini conserved in the
Archivio Storico di Casa Ricordi. The facsimile faithfully reproduces
the manuscript score in its original form in three volumes, each
half-bound in leather with gilt impressions on the spine. These volumes
are accompanied by a small volume of text comprising two essays and a
section of 85 coloured illustrations of the iconography of the opera
and other relative material conserved in the Archivio Storico Ricordi –
sketches, sets, costumes, photographs, etc. The first essay, by Roger
Parker, "Easy reading is damned hard writing" : Puccini at work, studies the manuscript itself while the second, by Mercedes Viale Ferrero, Vedere Tosca, discusses the iconography. The text of the accompanying volume is in English and Italian.
